Periodic K56 Modem Updated Information

Update note: PlantageNet now supports V.90, the ITU standard, as well as K56Flex in all of our POPs.

As many of you are aware, we've been upgrading our K56Flex software to the latest versions as they become available. This has done much to improve the quality of K56Flex connections from users that also have reasonably up-to-date flash code in their modems. If you have pre-1.0 K56Flex code in your modem, you will not benefit from this however.

To see what version you are running, you need to send a "ATi3" command to the modem. This can be accomplished with Windows 95 Hyper-Terminal Program.

  1. Click on Start.
  2. click Programs
  3. click Accessories
  4. click Hyperterminal
  5. In the Hyperterminal Window, click on the Hyperterm Icon.
    • When asked to name your connection, enter something.. not really important since we will not be saving any information here.
    • When prompted for a phone number, again pick one... I suggest 1... :)
    • Click on connect.
    • Immediately upon attempt to dial, click on cancel.
    • IF it asks if you would like to reconnect, select cancel.
  6. With a small cursor blinking in the corner type ATi3 and hit .
  7. The modem will return some numbers and letters, it will look like,
       May12'97 v.520 p1

You are concerned with the numbers following the 'v.' or 'ver.' or 'version' (your modem will vary)...

  8. If the numbers are LESS than 1, ie. .520, .500, etc.. you will need to upgrade your flash code on your modem.

To do this, you must get the upgrade from the manufacturer. This is often available online; here are some URLs:

We do not offer support for performing these upgrades or locating upgrades for any manufacturers; you will usually find any info you need by doing web searches, however. If you find any additional manufacturers upgrade sites, please forward them to support@pil.net and we'll post them here.
