A salty look at Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

Kicked out of Massachusetts on their ears, a few salty folks took up residence in Rhode Island. I’ll leave the balance of Rhode Island history to the scholars, who likely don’t understand Narragansett beer. My part will include what I have shown my son Colin, who now has a healthy percentage of salt in his blood.

That’s a quahog, not a clam. Clams live in Massachusetts. Their Ipswich clams are good. Stuffies on steroids use sea clam shells.

I never knew a scrod when I was growing up. They must be a new designer fish, or a yuppie generic fish. Fish 'n chips is made with haddock. Enough black pepper and malt vinegar to keep away the horseflies is good on fish 'n chips. Sissies use catsup. Tourists use tartar sauce. Cooks add teeth scrapings to it for tourists.

That’s a cabinet, not a milk shake. Not to be confused with a frappe, which it is in Massachusetts. At the Newport Creamery, a monster one is an Awful Awful.

Whenever a word ends in the letter r, loose it. CHOWDAH. Whenever a word ends in a double vowel, use those deleted r’s. PHILADELPHIER.

Bettah. Now you can read and pronounce the descriptions that follow.

Defiant

Riding through Bristol, just north of the Mount Hope Bridge, we found this America's Cup boat, the Defiant, on the lawn.

Flags

Flags at Ocean Drive, Newport. In the spirit of a painting of a woman in red sprawled on grass
